Above & Beneath

2023
Embroidery installation Variable dimensions

This is an evolutive artwork, inspired by the tropical vegetation in Brazil. I have always been fascinated by trees and the related ecosystem. As someone who grew up on a tropical island and moved later to Europe, I rediecovered tropical trees during my stay in Sao Paulo. Based on real trees planted around the Bienal Pavillion in Ibirapuera Park, this work shows a very different perspective to perceive trees: above we see the canopies by which we recognize the species; beneath we see the root system through which trees share water, nutrients and information. With the slow process of embroidery, visitors can witness the trees “growing” on the landscape day by day during the exhibition.
The second phase of this work was to create another piece of embroidery according to the park next to my permanent residence in Montpellier. These two pieces are connected together with thread symbolising the famous root network of trees. More pieces will be added to the installation, showing an interdependence of the entire world.
